Mexico Canta, a pilot opera lab produced by VisionIntoArt and Under the Volcano, was held in January 2011 in Tepoztlán, Mexico. Mexico Sings provides resident artists and students the time and space to create visionary, non-traditional works. Applicants include emerging and experienced writers, playwrights, composers, and performance artists interested in producing collaborative work and building new repertoire in both English and Spanish. The ten-day lab, modeled after Under the Volcano’s literary master classes, will feature morning workshops, afternoon time to work on individual & collaborative pieces, informal evening talks on aspects of stagecraft and narrative, and time to explore the village and surroundings. Faculty, drawn from Mexico, the US and Canada will work cross-group on stage ideas and participate in evening talks. Magda Bogin and Paola Prestini are co-directors of the lab.
